Biography

Choi Jeong (born 1996) turned professional in 2010 and has been Korea's top female player for more than a decade. She is the only woman ranked among the world's top 100 players.

In November 2022 she became the first woman to reach the final of a major open world championship, beating Byun Sangil in the Samsung Cup semifinal before losing to Shin Jinseo. She has won the women's world championship, the Wu Qingyuan Cup, several times, including the 6th edition in 2023 over Fujisawa Rina.

At home she has held every Korean women's title and remains the player to beat in Korean women's Go.

Choi Jeong took Black against world top-20 player Byun Sangil and won by resignation to reach the Samsung Cup final. No woman had ever reached the final of a major open world championship before this game.

Choi was slightly ahead at 63% when she played J8 on move 105. Byun Sangil's G12 on move 106 was the losing move, and her winrate rose to 96%. The only defence was S13, a move just 3% of 9-dan players spot. No woman had reached a major open world final before this game.
