Biography

Gu Zihao (born 1998) turned professional in 2011 and has been in the world's top fifteen for most of the last eight years.

He won the 22nd Samsung Cup in December 2017, sweeping Tang Weixing 2-0 in the final for his first world title at nineteen.

In June 2023 he won the inaugural Quzhou Lanke Cup, coming back from a game-one loss to beat Shin Jinseo 2-1 in the final.

Having lost the opening game and levelled the series the day before, Gu Zihao took Black against world number one Shin Jinseo and won the decider by resignation. It was his second world title.

Gu Zihao was ahead at 61% when he played D2 on move 123. Shin Jinseo's F3 on move 124 settled the final, Gu rising to 86%. The correct C2 was not a hard move; nearly every 9-dan player sees it, which makes the slip all the more surprising from the world number one. Gu won by resignation.
