Eight world titles before 23

Biography

Ke Jie (born 1997) turned professional in 2008 and was the world's top-ranked player from 2015 to 2019. He won eight world championships before turning 23, the youngest ever to reach that mark, including three Samsung Cups and two MLily Cups.

In May 2017 he played AlphaGo Master in Wuzhen and lost 0-3, the program's last public match. He has since remained China's most recognisable player and a national team leader.

He beat Shin Jinseo 2-0 in the 2020 Samsung Cup final, won the 2021 LG Cup, and took silver in the men's individual event at the 2023 Asian Games.

Leading 1-0, Ke Jie took Black against Shin Jinseo, by then the world's number one, and won by half a point to complete a 2-0 sweep. It was his eighth world title and his third Samsung Cup.

This final game swung late. Shin Jinseo was ahead, and Ke Jie was down to 10% when he played N2 on move 233. White's L19 on move 234, a small move at the top edge, let Ke Jie back in: his winrate rose to 36%, and he squeezed out a half-point win in the endgame that followed. J14 was the move for Shin, one about 25% of 9-dan players find.
