Taiwan's long-time number one

Biography

Wang Yuanjun (born 1996) turned professional in Taiwan in 2007 and was the island's top-ranked player for most of the 2010s and early 2020s.

He has won Taiwan's Tianyuan, Meijin and Guoshou titles repeatedly and holds one of the largest domestic title hauls in Taiwanese history.

He represented Taiwan at the 2023 Asian Games, where he beat Ichiriki Ryo in the men's team event, and is a regular in LG Cup and Samsung Cup main draws.

Wang took White against Ichiriki Ryo, Japan's number one and soon-to-be Ing Cup champion, and won by resignation in the team preliminaries at the Hangzhou Asian Games.

A level game, 49%, until Wang Yuanjun played B3 in the corner on move 62. Ichiriki's D6 on move 63 was a natural shape move, and it was wrong: Wang's winrate rose to 84%. The move was E8, played by only 7% of 9-dan players. Wang won by resignation.
