Kansai Ki-in's leading player

Biography

Yu Chengchi (born 1995) was born in Taiwan and became a Kansai Ki-in professional in 2009. For more than a decade he has been the strongest player of Japan's second professional body.

He is a regular in the Kisei, Meijin and Honinbo leagues and has repeatedly challenged for major Japanese titles, taking Iyama Yuta and Ichiriki Ryo to full-length title matches.

Internationally he has reached the LG Cup round of 16 and beaten Chinese national team players, including Xie Ke at the 5th MLily Cup.

vs. Xie Ke, 5th MLily Cup, Round of 64

August 3, 2023

Yu took White against Xie Ke, a former LG Cup finalist and Chinese national team member, and won by resignation to advance at the MLily Cup.

Yu Chengchi was a little ahead, 58%, when he played N18 at the top on move 88. Xie Ke's N15 on move 89 was a surprising slip from a Chinese national team player: the plain Q18 is a move nearly every 9-dan player sees, 95% of them, and it would have kept the game close. Instead Yu rose to 76% and went on to win by resignation.
