A connection is when a stone(s) links back to another stone/group of stones. They now share liberties.

What is a connection?

To connect is to play a stone that merges two friendly stones or groups into a single chain. Once joined, the group shares all of its liberties and the opponent can no longer cut between the original pieces. The Japanese word is tsugi (ツギ).

The simplest way to connect is a direct connection. Later you will see other ways to connect, which have various tradeoffs, such as a tigers mouth or a diagonal. More on those later!

When to use a connection?

For starters, connect when you are low on liberties! We know from previous sections that when you get low on liberties, you become susceptible to being captured. Connecting your stones together makes it harder for you to be captured!
