Seki in Go — How Mutual Life Without Two Eyes Works | PlayGo.gg

A situation where both colors cannot be captured, but do not have 2 eyes.

What is seki?

A seki forms whenever two opposing groups end a fight with shared liberties that neither side can fill safely. Both black and white group are surrounded and don't have 2 eyes, but both players cannot afford to fill the liberties. In this case, both sides are alive!

When to aim for seki?

I wouldn't try to aim for a seki in general. It's a rare situation that comes up only when you start to hit higher ranks. For now, just keep in mind that this is a possibility but don't dive into the details until you are around 1000 ELO or 20k.

Example of seki in a game

Can black make a seki?

Seki is a rule of the game that results from liberties, captures, and 2 eyes. Don't worry about it too much until you are better at the game!
