Biography

Kang Dongyun (born January 23, 1989) is a Korean 9-dan and one of the most accomplished players of his generation. A disciple of Kwon Kabryong, he turned pro in 2002 at age 13 and was promoted to 9-dan in 2008.

He has won two world major titles. The first came in 2009 at the 22nd Fujitsu Cup, where as a 20-year-old he defeated the legendary Lee Changho by 2.5 points with white to claim his first world championship, though only after first eliminating Park Yeonghun in the semifinals in 200 moves. The second came at the 20th LG Cup (2015–16), where he beat fellow Korean Park Yeonghun 2-1 in the final.

20-year-old Kang Dongyun's first world major title. Playing white against the legendary Lee Changho, Kang prevailed by 2.5 points to win the 22nd Fujitsu Cup.

Kang was in control early, 78% by move 50, when he played R5. Lee Changho's N7 on move 51 pushed Kang's winrate to 92% and the game never came back. KataGo's suggestion for Black, F2, is a move almost no human plays; only 2% of 9-dan players find it.
