Youngest professional in Japanese history

Biography

Nakamura Sumire (born 2009) became a professional in 2019 at age ten, the youngest in Japanese history, after training in Korea as a child. Her debut drew national television coverage in Japan.

In 2024 she transferred to the Korea Baduk Association to compete in the world's deepest professional field, and now plays in Korean leagues and domestic events.

In December 2024 she won the 8th Korean Women's Kisei, beating Choi Jeong in the final for her first Korean title at age fifteen.

Fifteen-year-old Nakamura took White against Choi Jeong, the world's strongest woman, and won by resignation in the opening game of the final. She went on to win the title, her first in Korea.

Choi Jeong kept this final close for a long time, and it was 47% for Nakamura going into move 180, where she played the small edge move T9. Choi's P6 in reply collapsed her position: Nakamura's winrate shot to 95%. P7, one point higher, was the move, found by 12% of 9-dan players. A fifteen-year-old had just beaten the world's strongest woman.
