Biography

Shin Jinseo (born 2000) has held the world #1 on goratings continuously since 2019, a streak he began at age 19, and he currently sits at 3860 Elo, a staggering 129 points clear of world #2 Ding Hao (3731). To put this gap into perspective: the same 129-point drop from Ding Hao lands you all the way down at world #21!

He has won eight international major championships, and he is still only 26 years old! Over the past three years his win rate has hovered around 90% in rated games, and in early 2025 he ripped off a 25-game winning streak spanning multiple tournaments before finally dropping a game.

Across the board sat Park Junghwan, a multiple-time international major champion and the elder statesman of Korean Go. Shin took the best-of-three final 2-0, claiming his first world major title and finally pairing his world #1 ranking with a trophy worthy of it. From this victory onward, the era of Shin Jinseo's dominance was no longer just a ranking. It was a reality, and one he has not relinquished since.

Park Junghwan had this game. Shin's winrate was down to 12% when he played C19 on move 220, a quiet question in the corner. Park answered R13 on move 221, and Shin's chances jumped to 66% in a single move. The correct B17 is found by only about 7% of 9-dan players.
