Biography

Ueno Asami (born 2001) turned professional in 2016 and quickly became known for a fearless fighting style that earned her the nickname the Hammer.

She has won the Female Kisei and Senko Cup among other Japanese women's titles, and has beaten male professionals in open events, including a run to the main draw of the Ryusei.

In December 2024 she won the 7th Wu Qingyuan Cup, beating Tang Jiawen 2-1 in the final to become the first Japanese player to win the women's world championship.

With the final tied 1-1, Ueno took Black in the decider and won by resignation to take the women's world title. Along the way she had beaten Li He and Yu Zhiying in the quarterfinal and semifinal.

Game three of the final was dead level, 49%, when Ueno played R4 in the lower right on move 81. Tang Jiawen answered R19 in the upper right on move 82, and Ueno's winrate rose to 71%. The move was G3, which about a quarter of 9-dan players would choose. Ueno won by resignation and the title.
