Biography

Xu Haohong (born 2001) is Taiwan's strongest player of the post-AlphaGo generation. He turned professional in 2014 and has held Taiwan's Meijin and other domestic titles.

At the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou he won the men's individual gold medal, beating Ke Jie in the final, the biggest result in Taiwanese Go history.

In 2024 he reached the final of the 10th Ing Cup, the first Taiwanese player to do so, beating Li Qincheng by half a point in the quarterfinal before losing the final to Ichiriki Ryo.

Xu took White against Li Qincheng, a former Chinese national champion, and won by half a point under Ing rules to reach the semifinal. He went on to become the first Taiwanese player in an Ing Cup final.

Li Qincheng held the upper hand deep into this quarterfinal, and Xu was at 28% when his P3 on move 152 threatened the lower side. Black's K2 on move 153 was the wrong defence, and Xu's winrate climbed to 55%. M14 was the answer, a move only 4% of 9-dan players consider. Xu won by half a point under Ing rules.
